Lunar Eclipse

Last Sunday I managed to stay awake (thanks to my daughter awakening me at 11:30 p.m.) to observe the total lunar eclipse in near zero temperature, too!

Super Storybird

My students are totally enthralled with writing on Storybird!  My student, Megan, has written 23 stories.  Here's a sample of one of her many stories:
Storybird is a free web site that offers kids writing opportunities!  The kids get to choose illustrations and go from there.  In addition, my students even write at home ~ FOR FUN!  Plus, my students LOVE to leave comments on their classmates' published stories.

Therapy Dogs Are Terrific!

Our class earned enough kindness points to earn a visit from two therapy dogs.  Check out golden doodle Oliver who prefers chasing his ball to having a treat:

Gallery Walk of Writing = A Great Experience!

My students and I are extremely lucky to have our Reading Specialist, Mrs. Seminara, visit us twice a week to work on writing using Lucy Calkins' Up the Ladder Program!  One of the activities involved doing a writing gallery walk in which students had to opportunity to read and comment upon their classmates' writing:

Still in School Next Week ~ ?

If you're lucky like me, you'll be in school until next Friday looking for educational and fun activities.  I just wrote a blog post at my Conversation From The Classroom with some FREE activites:

Storybird = Writing on the Computer = FUN FOR ALL!

I recently discovered Storybird which is a FREE web site that offers kids the opportunity to write picture books or poems on the computer.

Now that we have Chromebook carts, it's so much easier to use the computers.  First the kids work on Lexia or Freckle which gives the kids reading and math practice.

After 20 minutes, the kids can make Powerpoints on Google slides or head over to Storybird.  The kids LOVE to write and create on the computer!

Ivory Ella = Excellent Shirts for an Excellent Cause!

If you're tired of spending a LOT of MONEY for famous named shirts, head over to Ella Ivory where you can purchase elephant-themed clothing and jewelry at a more reasonable price point.  In addition, the company donates part of the profits to Save the Elephants and other charitable organizations:

The Two Purchases I Kept from the Nordstrom Sale

Check out the two items I kept from the BIG Nordstrom sale:

The denim Baker Boy hat is a perfect transitional piece as it covers my ears.

The Kate Spade scarf is sold out.

I LOVE my "Endless Summer" pillow (click here) for similar.

The other BIG news is my boot is gone!

Heartwood Hotel Book Review!

I won a copy of this Heartwood Hotel book from a Mailbox Blog raffle.  After winning, I wrote a review, and it got published in The Learning Magazine.

Some Quick and Exciting Updates!

Happy Summer!

I'm feeling totally lucky because next week I'm taking a class at the Teacher Resource Center at the New England Aquarium!  The class is all about water, the ocean, and its effect on climate.  So far I've read three articles for the course, and I've learned about Ocean Literacy.  Have you ever heard of it?  Neither had I!  I'll be writing a blog post soon to tell you all about what I'm learning.

My new blog post about preventing falls is up on Conversations From The Classroom.

In this post I talk about my annual resolution ~ keeping my desk neat at school.  Of course, I'll be making the same resolution again...

Next Up ~ The Commonwealth Museum = State Museum of Massachusetts!

Last year, the third graders at my school visited this amazing museum for free!

state museum of Massachusetts
Most states have a state museum or historical society that could provide free field trips or resources for you and your students ~ check this out to make sure you're not missing out on any opportunities!

Happy Patriots' Day!

Just think ~ if you lived in Massachusetts or Maine, you would have an official Monday holiday to observe Patriots' Day to honor the first battles of the Revolutionary War.  In Wisconsin, schools are supposed to educate students about this important event in American history.  I'm feeling lucky to live in Massachusetts these days.

Thanks to my students who have their very own You Tube channels, I decided to investigate myself and came up this perfect video about the Boston Massacre:

It's really a great video if you're studying the Boston Massacre!
