Super Artist Rob Surette Visits!

On Friday our PTO treated our school to an amazing assembly in which extremely talented artist Rob Surette painted and put on an inspirational and moving assembly:

How can you make the longest paper chain?

We've been working on measuring and drawing lines using rulers.  One afternoon I gave each student a piece of 8.5 by 11 inch paper.  Then I told them to make the longest paper chain possible.  Several students used their rulers which made me so happy!

Welcome Winter ~ Whether We Like It Or Not!

As I sit here writing, the first snow of the winter is starting to fall.  I always enjoy incorporating poetry by my favorite poet, Doug Florian, in my morning messages.

It's Nice To Be Important....


The day after I used this Morning Message, I asked the kids to tell me what their parents always tell them.  The next day, many of my students came back with the following answer:  "Clean your room." 

Did your parents ever tell you the same message over and over?  I always heard this one, too:  "Freckles are a sign of beauty."

 Morning Messages

This week we've been learning about weather, and the Morning Messages reflect that:

The "Fahrenheit Weather" poem came from Pinterest as did the Clouds poem.

 Weather

Last week, we dug right into our Weather unit in Science.  For once, the weather cooperated!  We had a snowstorm over the weekend followed by single digit cold temperature.  By Thursday, the temperature was in the 60's! 

Making Chains

The kids had a blast making paper chains.  The challenge was to make the longest chain using one piece of construction paper.  Each chain was totally unique!

Change Is Simple Visit

Check out this amazingly fun tent activity from Change Is Simple:

In each tent, there was an adult who guided the group in solving math word problems related to animals who live in that ecosystem!  The kids LOVED it!  Imagine what else you could do with these tents....

Penguin Day

Using the materials from the fun Winter Bundle, each student wrote an informational paragraph/mini-book about different penguins:

First, we drew adorable penguins (click here.)  In addition, each student received a list of penguin facts.  Plus, Tacky the Penguin is now in our Listening Center, and the kids and their book buddies totally enjoyed this story yesterday!
